THE DISH
Six variations of butter-, cheese-, and jelly-less toasts (recipe + close-ups at the bottom)
THE INSPIRATION
See the lyrics above; pretty self-explanatory!
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Do I really need to tell you about the Flaming Lips? If so, you should probably just read this.
ABOUT INDIE ROCK DELI
It all started here, with a normal day at work that turned into an hours-long giggle fit. Indie Rock Deli dishes are inspired by punny takes on band names and song titles. Leave your own suggestions in the comments and they might be used in a future post! (No, they definitely don’t have to actually be indie rock.)
THE RECIPE
Apologies for lack of directions or specific amounts of most ingredients on this, but you can really just do whatever you want! I used a sliced baguette, brushed with a little bit of olive oil and baked at 250 degrees for about 10-15 minutes. These make great appetizers, but you can totally make them on normal-sized bread, too. The ultimate favorite was definitely the egg salad; I also loved the lox and peanut butter/banana.
Lox
• Spread: plain yogurt (obviously cream cheese will work with this, too, but as per the lyrics, no cheese allowed)
• Topping: Lox, red onions, green olives, fresh dill
Curried apples
• Spread: Plain or Greek yogurt
• Topping: Apples sauteed with curry powder, cumin and cinnamon
Cinnamon/sugar
• Spread: Non-butter (I think we used Smart Balance?)
• Topping: Cinnamon, sugar
Apples/honey
• Spread: Honey
• Thin slice of apple, cinnamon
Peanut butter/caramelized banana
• Spread: Natural peanut butter
• Topping: Bananas sauteed with butter, brown sugar and a splash of orange juice
Egg/beet/avocado salad
• Spread: Honey mustard (honey, brown mustard, plain yogurt)
• Hard-boiled eggs, avocado, boiled beets, red onions and salt, topped with tiny arugula
Loving the contrast in the first picture from the green plate. At first I had the scale all wrong and thought they were sandwich slices of bread and not baguette. It made me think you had a new bright green table in your apartment. Lox without cream cheese seems wrong and the fake butter almost seems like cheating with the theme 😉
Sautéed bananas are delicious. Once I had them sautéed in butter with slices of habanero pepper. They were amazing on top of ice cream.
Yep, it’s just a plate, and not even mine (my friend Amy’s)! And I know, lox is best with cream cheese, but that would be breaking the rules, and it still tasted great. As for the butter, to be honest, I totally forgot about that in the song until after I’d already made it 🙂
I don’t think I’d do so well with habanero on anything, but that sounds interesting …
You take the habaneros out after sautéing so its not too bad. Could probably work with jalapeños or serranos as well and end up significantly less spicy.
in no way does this stick with the theme – but my favorite toast is a little butter then apple and havarti cheese toasted for a few minutes until melted and awesome. yay.
That sounds SO GOOD! I just bought some havarti so I’ll have to try it!
Nice header.Guitar board is the best!!!
Looks delicious – will have to try them all, but add bacon to the peanut butter banana to make an Elvis 🙂
